How do I find my valve's serial number?

The serial number is on the nameplate. On most safety valves it's a small metal tag riveted, welded, or bolted to the valve body, usually on bonnet, or side of the body housing. Nameplate can also be hung off valves with wire & lead seal. Valve nameplate information might also be etched into the valve body.  Commonly what information you'll find on the nameplate would include: Serial number (unique per valve) Manufacturer name and model number Set pressure Relieving capacity Size and connection type Material designation Date of manufacture or certification batch If the nameplate is damaged, painted over, or unreadable, send us clear photos of the valve from multiple angles. How often should my safety valves be tested?

We certify safety valves on a 12-month interval. To keep your certificates current, book a retest each year before the previous one expires. The maximum interval between tests depends on the pressure equipment the valve protects. AS3788 sets these limits: Steam boilers: annual (required) Compressed air and process vessels: every 2 to 4 years (recommended) LPG and static storage tanks: every 2 to 10 years (recommended) Pressure piping: every 5 years (external) (recommended) Transportable vessels (LPG, ammonia, chlorine): every 1 to 2 years (recommended) Most customers stick with annual testing. It keeps certifications valid for insurers and inspectors, and catches problems early. Shorter cycles apply for corrosive, dirty, or high-cycling service, harsh environments, or where your insurer requires it. Not sure when your valves are due? What's the difference between a safety valve and a pressure relief valve?

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, they describe devices designed for different service conditions: Safety valves are typically used for gas, vapour, or steam service. They open with a sudden "pop" action when set pressure is reached, releasing media rapidly to protect the system. Pressure relief valves are used for liquid service. They open gradually in proportion to the overpressure, providing modulated relief. Many modern devices — referred to as PSVs (Pressure Safety Valves) — combine both behaviours and can be specified for either fluid type. The terminology used on a datasheet depends on the manufacturer and the regional standard. What's set pressure vs reseat pressure?

Two of the key numbers attached to every safety valve. They describe different points in the relief cycle: Set pressure: the pressure at which the valve opens (starts to lift). Stamped on the nameplate and matched against your operating pressure. We verify set pressure on every valve during workshop testing per AS 1271. Reseat pressure: the pressure at which the valve closes again after lifting. Always lower than set pressure. The gap between them is called blowdown. AS 1271 maximum allowable blowdown: Gas, air, or vapour service: up to 15 percent of set pressure Liquid service: up to 20 percent of set pressure Reseat pressure and blowdown are inherent design parameters of the valve, established by the manufacturer during type testing on specialised laboratory rigs. We don't measure blowdown during routine workshop testing — see the "Why don't you test for blowdown or reseat pressure?" for the technical reasoning.

What materials should my safety valve be made from?

Material selection for a safety valve is the end user's responsibility. AS 1210 Appendix E2(g) requires the purchaser to specify the material of construction when placing an order. Appendix C2 further confirms that selection of materials sits with the plant designer (or process designer where applicable). Our role as a distributor is to supply the valve in the materials you specify. Common material options across our manufacturer range: Bronze: clean steam, water, air service Cast iron: general industrial water and air, low-temperature steam Carbon steel: general process service, steam, hydrocarbons Stainless steel (304, 316, 316L): corrosive media, food and beverage, pharmaceutical Duplex / super duplex: seawater, high-chloride environments Hastelloy, Monel, Inconel: aggressive chemical service, high-temperature applications Body, trim (disc, nozzle, seat), spring, and gasket materials can each be specified independently to suit the service. I can't find my certificates in the portal. What should I do?

Most missing-certificate issues fall into a few common categories. Try these first: Check your filters. The portal defaults to showing recent documents. Clear any date, status, or category filters to see your full history. Search by a different field. Try the valve's brand, model, or service date instead of serial number. A typo or partial match can hide what you're looking for. Confirm you're logged in to the right customer account. If your business has multiple customer numbers (e.g. one per site or division), the certificate may be registered against a different customer number. Allow time for recent service. Certificates for valves serviced in the last few days may still be in our QA process and not yet published. Still can't find it? Are you a NATA-accredited laboratory?

Not yet. We're currently undergoing NATA assessment and expect accreditation to be granted by October 2026. Why don't you test for blowdown or reseat pressure?

Accepted Answer

Blowdown (reseat pressure) is established during the manufacturer's type testing on specialised high-volume laboratory rigs, and forms part of the valve's approved design basis. It's not part of routine workshop testing because conventional test benches physically cannot reproduce the flow and inlet conditions required to measure it reliably. Why: Accurate blowdown measurement requires the valve to flow at full rated capacity with stable, quasi-steady inlet conditions during the opening and reseating cycle. Workshop test benches don't have the upstream volume (for compressible fluids) or flow capacity (for liquids) to reproduce those conditions. Inlet pressure collapses or transient effects dominate as soon as the valve opens. Under those conditions the reseat event is governed by test system behaviour rather than the valve's intrinsic closing characteristic. You get chatter, flutter, delayed reseating, or apparent blowdown values that don't reflect true valve performance. This physical dependency is recognised in ASME PTC 25-2018, which sets out the test medium volume and flow conditions required for accurate reseat measurement (Section 8-4.2(d), Figure 8-2.2-1). What's included in a valve overhaul?

A valve overhaul covers everything from when we receive your valve to when it goes back to you, fully reconditioned and certified. Here's the process: Receipt and logging. Every valve is tagged and registered against your customer record. Initial inspection. Visual and dimensional check. As-received testing. Verify Opening Pressure, Seat leakage and Bellows Leakage (if applicable) Disassembly and component assessment. Reconditioning. Serviceable parts are reconditioned. Unserviceable parts are replaced with OEM spares. Final certification testing to AS1271 and API527. Documentation. Digital test certificate and inspection report for each valve. Typical turnaround is 5 to 10 working days. We can do faster on request.  We keep complete records of every valve we service, including failure rates, failure types, and other performance data across your fleet. Question 15

Can I cancel an order I've placed?

Yes, in most cases. What you can recover depends on how far along the order is. Pre-production (no work started) Full refund of any amounts prepaid, less any third-party charges already incurred that can't be recovered. In-production (we've started work) A cancellation fee of up to 25% of the order value applies, covering materials, labour, and overhead spent up to the date you cancel. The actual fee is based on costs incurred and is capped at 25%. Customised or imported goods Once customisation has begun (flange drilling, valve modification, specification-to-order manufacture, etc.), the order cannot be cancelled. You remain liable for the full order value and must take delivery. For imported goods, any cancellation charges passed through from our manufacturer or forwarder are added on top. Post-despatch (order has shipped) Once the goods have left our facility, the order cannot be cancelled. Returns may be possible at our discretion. See the next FAQ on returns. Where a refund is due, it's processed within 3 business days of cancellation being approved, with a breakdown of any fees or deductions. Can you supply spares for legacy or discontinued valves?

We can supply legacy spares for as long as the manufacturer continues to produce them. Once the manufacturer ceases supply, that part is no longer available through us — at which point a current-model replacement is usually the best path forward. To check availability, send us: Manufacturer name and model number Serial number (if visible) Photos of the nameplate and any visible markings For our represented brands (LESER, KSPC, Aquatrol, Herose, Goetze, Taylor Valve Technology), we have direct access to manufacturer parts catalogues and can confirm availability quickly. For other major brands (Crosby, Anderson Greenwood, Farris, Consolidated, etc.), we'll enquire through that manufacturer's local distribution network. If your valve has reached end-of-life for spares, we'll quote a current-model alternative that matches your installation footprint, process and certification requirements. Do you offer credit accounts?

Yes, we offer 30-day credit accounts to businesses with an established trading history with us. To qualify, you'll need: At least 5 orders placed with us within the last 6 months Three trade references (preferably from suppliers in the valve, mechanical, or industrial space) Your business name, ABN, and trading address The trading history requirement gives us a working relationship to assess before extending credit terms. Account setup takes up to 2 weeks, subject to receiving responses from your trade references. We'll let you know as soon as your account is active. What is API 527 seat tightness?

API 527 (Seat Tightness of Pressure Relief Valves) is the industry standard for confirming a safety valve seals tight enough between relief events. It defines acceptable leakage rates when the closed valve is held at a test pressure below its set point. Test method depends on the service: Gas, air, or vapour valves: bubble test. The valve inlet is pressurised and outlet leakage is measured by counting bubbles through a calibrated tube over a fixed time interval. Liquid valves: water test. Outlet leakage is measured by volume over a fixed time interval. Acceptable leakage rates vary by valve size, type, and seat material. Soft seated valves have stricter leakage limits than metal seated. We perform API 527 seat tightness testing on every valve we service: As-received: to establish current condition and identify seat damage Final certification: after reconditioning, to confirm the seat seals before the valve returns to service Results appear on every test certificate. Can you service valves we didn't buy from you?

Yes. We service safety valves and pressure relief equipment from any major manufacturer, regardless of who supplied them originally. We represent and stock spares for: LESER, KSPC, Aquatrol, Herose, Goetze, and Taylor Valve Technology. For valves from other major brands (Crosby, Anderson Greenwood, Farris, Consolidated, and similar), we still handle the service work, but parts are sourced separately when needed. Can I return goods I've purchased?

Yes, in some cases. Goods aren't returnable as a matter of right, but we accept returns at our discretion. The terms depend on whether the return is a warranty issue or not. Do you supply test certificates with new valves?

We offer two certificate options on new valves, supplied as a quoted item at the time of order: AS 1271 certificate — pressure test only AS 1271 + API 527 combined certificate — pressure test plus seat tightness test Certificates are not included by default. If your application requires documentation, specify which certificate type you need when requesting a quote and we'll include it in the pricing. The absence of a certificate is not an absence of testing. Every valve we dispatch is verified during workshop processing. The certificate is the formal documentation of that testing — we only distribute it when you've requested it at quotation. Certificates are issued digitally under our ISO 9001:2015 quality management system, with results traceable to NATA-calibrated test equipment. Need certification for a new valve? What's the difference between conventional, balanced bellows, and pilot-operated valves?

There are three main types of pressure relief valve: Conventional (direct-acting, spring-loaded) A spring holds the disc closed against inlet pressure. When inlet pressure overcomes the spring force, the valve opens. Best suited to systems with constant or near-zero back pressure Outlet back pressure adds to the spring force and changes the effective set pressure Balanced bellows A flexible bellows isolates the back of the disc from outlet back pressure, so back pressure doesn't affect the spring force or set pressure. Suitable for systems with variable or high back pressure (typically up to 30-50% of set pressure) Pilot-operated A small pilot valve senses inlet pressure and uses it to hold the main valve closed. When set pressure is reached, the pilot triggers the main valve to open. Tight shutoff right up to set pressure, allowing tighter operating to relief pressures ratios. Are your quoted delivery times binding?

Quoted delivery times are estimates, not binding commitments, unless we have agreed otherwise in writing. How delivery timing works The delivery period starts from the date we issue your Order Confirmation (OC), once stock, pricing, and any prerequisite documents or clearances have been confirmed. The delivery period is deemed met if the goods have left our facility, or we have notified you that they are ready for despatch, by the end of the quoted period. The delivery period extends automatically by any time lost to buyer-side delays (incomplete order info, missing documentation, delayed approvals) or force majeure events. When delivery is binding If you need a guaranteed delivery date (e.g. shutdown timing, project milestone), let us know at the quotation stage. We can review and, where we can commit, confirm a fixed delivery date in writing as part of the order. Delayed despatch at your request If you ask us to hold goods past their ready-for-despatch date, storage charges may apply starting one month after we notify you the goods are ready. After a reasonable grace period without despatch, we may either dispose of the goods to a third party (recovering any shortfall from you) or offer extended terms to take delivery. What's the warranty on new valves?

New valves supplied from our manufacturer range are warranted for 12 months from the date of supply, against defects existing before transfer of risk, including faulty construction, deficient materials, defective workmanship, or supply outside calibration tolerance. What's covered: Manufacturing defects present at the time of supply Deficient or non-conforming materials Calibration outside tolerance What's not covered: Damage from incorrect or improper use Unauthorised modifications Incorrect installation or commissioning Natural wear and tear Use outside specified operating parameters or environment Damage from unsuitable maintenance materials, replacement parts, or media Modifications or repairs by parties other than us, without our approval Chemical, electro-chemical, or electrical effects Damage originating from transport to customer For significant items sourced from third parties, our liability is limited to assigning to you our warranty claims against the original supplier. We'll support you through the claim process where required. Any defect must be reported to us in writing as soon as it becomes apparent. Where the complaint is substantiated, we will repair or replace at our discretion. Replacement or rectification work carries a 3-month warranty, with the original warranty period extended by any operational interruption caused by the rectification. We contact you with options. This might include further reconditioning, sourcing replacement parts, or replacing the valve with a like-for-like alternative if it's beyond economical repair. You decide the next step. No work proceeds past this point without your approval. If the valve is beyond repair and you need a fast turnaround, we'll resize and select a PSV from stock that meets your application requirements. Our sales engineers will work through your operating conditions (fluid, pressure, capacity, connection type, certification) and recommend a suitable alternative from our manufacturer range. How do I prepare a valve for service shipment?

Before sending a valve to us, three things need to be in order: cleaning, paperwork, and packaging. 1. Clean and decontaminate the valve You are responsible for ensuring the valve arrives free from residue of any process fluid, chemical, hydrocarbon, contaminant, or other substance that could pose a health, safety, or environmental risk to our personnel or facility. If the valve has been in process service, make sure it has been: Drained, vented, and depressurised Flushed and cleaned of all process residue Inspected externally for visible contamination 2. Complete the Valve Repair Request Form Every consignment must include a completed and signed Valve Repair Request Form, which incorporates the dangerous goods declaration. The form needs to: Cover all items in the consignment Be signed by an authorised representative of your business Identify any residual hazard or special handling precautions We rely on the declaration as accurate, so fill it out carefully. When would I use a rupture/bursting disk instead of a safety valve?

Rupture/Bursting disks and safety valves both protect against overpressure, but they work very differently. The right choice depends on your fluid, response time, and whether you need to conserve process media. Use a rupture disk when: The process media would foul, plug, or corrode a safety valve's internals (sticky polymers, slurries, dirty service) You need instantaneous, full-bore relief, typically for runaway reactions, vapour cloud events, or rapid pressure rise The fluid is highly toxic or expensive and any seat leakage from a safety valve is unacceptable The protected volume can tolerate complete release of contents (no need to reseat) The application calls for a non-mechanical, no-moving-parts device for reliability Use a safety valve when: You need the system to keep operating after a relief event (the valve reseats, system contains) The relief event might cycle several times before the issue is resolved Conservation of process media matters (cost, environmental release limits) The process is clean and the valve's internals won't be compromised Or use both, in a combined arrangement A rupture/bursting disk installed upstream of a safety valve gives you the best of both: The disk isolates the safety valve from the process media, protecting its internals The safety valve provides reseating once the disk bursts Common in hazardous, sticky, or contaminating service (pharmaceuticals, polymers, food processing) In a combined setup, the disk's burst pressure and the safety valve's set pressure must be coordinated, and a small bleed connection between them is normally required to detect a leaking disk. Selection between a rupture disk, safety valve, or combined arrangement is the end user's responsibility per AS 1210, based on your process risk assessment. Need help selecting? What happens if I forget about a valve I've sent for service?

We get in touch when we need direction (quote approval, confirmation of next steps, payment, etc.). If we don't hear back, the following process applies. Stage 1: First notice If you haven't responded to our correspondence, approved a quote, confirmed instructions, or paid an outstanding amount, we'll send a first notice identifying what's outstanding. Stage 2: Final notice (14 days later) If the matter remains unresolved 14 days after the first notice, we'll send a final notice. The final notice will state our intention to return or dispose of the item, and the date this will happen (at least 7 days after the final notice). Stage 3: Action If the matter is still unresolved on the date in the final notice, we may: Cease any further work on the item Return the item to you at your cost Invoice for all charges incurred to the date of return, including work performed, handling, packaging, and freight Where the item goes If you provided a return address when the item was delivered to us, we return it there. Risk passes to you on despatch. If no return address was provided, or we can't reach you to confirm one, the item will be destroyed and disposed of after the final notice date. You remain liable for all charges incurred up to the date of return or disposal. What's the warranty on serviced valves?

We warrant our service work for 12 months from the date the valve is returned to you, against defects in our workmanship, parts we have supplied, or calibration outside tolerance. What's covered: Faulty workmanship in the service work we performed Replacement parts we supplied during the service Set pressure calibration outside the tolerance applied per AS 1271 What's not covered: Original design, manufacture, or specification of the valve itself Hidden, developing, or pre-existing defects not detectable at the time of service Damage from incorrect installation, operation, or maintenance after the valve returns to you Damage sustained during transport to customer.  Use outside the valve's specified operating parameters or environment Natural wear and tear Modifications or repairs by anyone other than us, without our prior approval A test certificate confirms the valve met AS 1271 at the time of testing. It is not a guarantee of system integrity, design adequacy, or ongoing operational safety, those remain the responsibility of the owner or operator. If you believe a valve we serviced is defective, notify us in writing as soon as the issue is apparent. We'll review the case and, where the defect is attributable to our work, repair or replace at our discretion.
