What information do you need to size and select a flame arrester or tank protection valve?

Sizing flame arresters and tank protection equipment requires a different set of inputs to safety relief valves. We work to API 2000 for tank venting and ISO 16852 for flame arresters. Send us the following with your enquiry: Tank or vessel details Tank type (atmospheric, low-pressure, API 650, API 620) Tank diameter, height, and total volume Operating temperature range Insulation status (affects fire-case sizing) Process / fluid Stored product (fluid name, vapour pressure, flash point) Vapour density relative to air Pumping rates (maximum in and out) Process temperatures during transfer Hazardous area / fire protection (flame arrester) Gas group classification (IIA, IIB, IIC) MESG (Maximum Experimental Safe Gap) of the medium Required application: in-line (deflagration or detonation) or end-of-line Distance from potential ignition source Pipe diameter and configuration Venting capacity (tank protection) Normal breathing requirement (pump-in / pump-out rates) Thermal in-breathing (cooling) and out-breathing (heating) demand Emergency vent requirement (fire case per API 2000) Acceptable pressure and vacuum limits Mechanical and installation Connection size and rating (flange, ANSI/AS/DIN) Orientation (vertical, horizontal) Material specification (body, screen, element) Required certifications (ATEX, USCG, FM, IECEx) Once we have this, we'll work through the sizing calculation, recommend a suitable flame arrester or vent from our manufacturer range, and confirm availability and lead time.
